About Us

Astrea Academy Trust is a family of 27 school based across South Yorkshire and Cambridgeshire.  We are an inclusive, all-through Trust that was established to tackle historic educational disadvantage and to play our part in the social regeneration of the areas in which we work.

The Role

This is a permanent position at 0.5FTE (an average of three days per week during term time).  It is home-based, but frequent travel within South Yorkshire will be required and the successful candidate will need to work flexibly, including at weekends.

At Astrea we firmly believe in the importance of local volunteers’ challenge and support for the academy in their community. Local committee members play a crucial role in working alongside the academy leadership team to drive school improvement and maintain high standards of education and pastoral support. The clerk will work with local committees at each South Yorkshire academy to enable them to fulfil this function effectively.

The post-holder will need to be proactive and creative in identifying where governance is working well but also where interventions may be required. They will build strong relationships with Principals, Chairs and central team colleagues in ensuring governance at each academy is fully ‘Ofsted-ready’. As the local governance expert, the post-holder will support the Trust’s local committee member training programme, and also lead on volunteer recruitment and retention in the region, with a licence to be innovative in attracting high calibre volunteers.

As part of this role the post-holder will also help to ensure that the flow of information between the various layers of Astrea governance – local, hub, Trustees – is functioning effectively.

Required Skills/Experience

The successful candidate will be self-motivating and comfortable working at home and across sites with minimal supervision.  Superbly organised and with the ability to encourage and cajole others to stay on track, the clerk will be confident in being the ‘go-to’ person for all matters governance in South Yorkshire.

Previous experience as a clerk to governing bodies or decision-making boards within the commercial, public or charitable sector is an advantage, but those with strong administrative skills and a commitment to the values of Astrea are encouraged to apply.
