On Tuesday 15 October, the construction of a brand-new school officially started at Byron Wood Primary Academy with a ground-breaking ceremony attended by the Department for Education and the contractor, Interserve.

The new state-of-the-art building is due to open in time for the next academic year. The existing school was built in the 1930s as a secondary school and was converted to a middle school in the 1960s. In 1991 it joined with Ellsemere Nursery to become Byron Wood School and in 2016 it joined the Astrea Academy Trust and became an Academy.

This week, six Byron Wood Primary Academy pupils aged 7 to 10 wore high visibility vests and took up spades to be the first to break the ground, marking the start of the construction works. Next week, pupils will get the chance to sign the steel before the first one is placed. To mark the occasion pupils will also bury a time capsule to record and remember the school’s history.

The new school is being delivered through the government’s Priority School Building Programme (PSBP) and is being built while pupils continue to learn in the existing building. The new building will provide pupils with a brand-new sports hall, an additional studio with a sprung dance floor and a food, science and Design & Technology room with state-of-the-art technologies. The nursery will be given its own entrance and all the children in Years 1 and 2 will move to the same floor with their own entrance.

Once the existing school has been demolished, the area will be landscaped, with new playing areas and a forestry school area. Byron Wood Primary is currently fundraising for new outdoor facilities for the children.

Bee Wood, Principal of Byron Wood Primary Academy, part of the Astrea Academy Trust, said:

“We can’t wait to settle into the new school building, the new facilities will mean that we can continue to provide an education that inspires beyond measure for all our children. We have recently been rated as “Good” by Ofsted, with inspectors recognising the significant improvements we have made. These state-of-the-art facilities are certainly going to help us as we continue on our improvement journey.”

Interserve’s Senior Site Manager Rob Holmes, said:

“We were delighted to welcome staff and pupils on site to attend this special ground-breaking ceremony. We will be working closely with the school throughout the build, to offer opportunities and learning experiences for the students as the project progresses.

“At Interserve we are committed to investing in the communities in which we live and work, and we have been working hard to ensure that the project benefits the local community, by retaining the local spend and creating new employment opportunities for local people.”

Byron Wood Primary Academy is currently taking applications for pupils to start in Reception in September 2020.
