The start of September sees Astrea Academy Trust celebrate the new school year with 11,000 pupils across the Astrea family, marking a 44% increase on the numbers of Astrea pupils at the end of the last academic year.

Established in 2015, Astrea operates primary, secondary and all-through schools in South Yorkshire and Cambridgeshire.

Astrea Academy Sheffield – a brand new all-through academy – opens its door for the first time this week, welcoming Reception children and Year 7s. This is the culmination for over three works designing and building the Trust’s flagship 2 – 18 school in the Burngreave area.

Also in the region, Balby Carr (formerly part of the WCAT group of schools) has now also formally joined Astrea.  Two further schools in Cambridgeshire also join the Astrea family this week, bringing the total number of schools to 25.

Although still a relatively young multi-academy trust, Astrea has already established a track record of delivery. Earlier in the summer, the trust saw a 12 per cent increase in results in reading, writing and maths – four times that national average improvement. Over the last two years, Astrea academies have seen a 26 per cent increase in the number of children achieving the required standards at primary school.

Students at Netherwood Academy were also celebrating a bumper crop of GCSE results, with 98% securing a Grade 9 – 4. In 11 subjects, the academy saw an improvement in results, with particularly strong progress in English, Maths and Science.

Libby Nicholas, Chief Executive of Astrea said:

“Astrea has been on quite a journey since we started in 2015, and I am incredibly proud of each and every one of our academies in the family. This week marks an important milestone for us – Astrea Academy Sheffield as our very first brand-new school opens its gates for the first time, and we see our overall numbers swell to 11,000 pupils across the South Yorkshire and Cambridgeshire regions.

“As a family, we are united in our commitment to delivering an education that inspires beyond measure. That commitment applies to every one of our 11,000 pupils during their time with us. These are exciting times for Astrea and for each of our academies and we look forward to celebrating their successes throughout the coming school year.”
